Travel Planning: Sri Lanka

We’ve recently booked a holiday to Sri Lanka so the planner side of my brain has switched on and I’ve gone into full-on organisation mode.

We’re quite excited about this holiday as it’s the only long holiday we have booked for 2018 and my husband has never been to Asia.  My travel to Asia has been limited to Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh, so I’m excited to explore a bit more.

Hubby and I were actually planning on a 7 day, all inclusive somewhere – Barbados, St. Lucia, maybe Cape Verde.  I got the travel planning bug, and decided to venture out a bit more, and now we’re doing a mix of touring around Sri Lanka for 9 days, followed by a few days relaxing in an all inclusive in the Maldives.

Our itinerary is:

Colombo –> Negombo –> Kandalama –> Polonnarua –> Kandy –> Nuwara Eliya –> Colombo

I’m quite excited because we’ve booked into some pretty amazing hotels.  In Kandalama, we’ll be staying in the Heritance Kandalama which looks incredible.  It is set amidst the jungle, on a mountainside overlooking the Sigiriya rock fortress.  We’ll be climbing Sigiriya whilst we’re there, so we’re really looking forward to enjoying a nice, relaxing hotel stay.   The hotel is next to the Kandalama Reservoir and is only 10 km from the Golden Temple of Dambulla.

We’ve also booked in to stay at 98 Acres, which is thatched-roof, hillside buildings on a lush 40-hectare tea estate in the central highlands.   It is 9 km from Ravana Falls, which is an iconic waterfall, based on local myths.  This eco-lodge looks like the perfect place to relax.

After Sri Lanka, we’re off to the Maldives to do nothing but lay in the sun on a beach.  We’re so desperately looking forward to our time in both Sri Lanka & the Maldives.

What are your Sri Lanka recommendations?  What should we not miss?
